CUNY Brooklyn College NSF GK-12 Evaluation (2010-2011)

CUNY Brooklyn College (www.brooklyn.cuny.edu) received a multi-year award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to implement a GK-12 program. The college selected ten graduate students each year to serve as Fellows in which they interacted with high school teachers and students for science lessons using the community of Brooklyn, New York as its science lab. Seeking an engaged and high-quality evaluator, the college hired Hezel Associates for external formative and summative evaluation for its fourth year of project evaluation, spanning November 2010 to June 2011.

Hezel Associates’ services included the following: creating a logic model; creating a study protocol; drafting new evaluation instruments (questionnaires); collecting and analyzing extant and new data; and providing informal formative and summative data summaries. The participants for year four of the project included ten Fellows, ten high school teachers (at five schools), and 375 students in grades 9-12. The multiple principal investigators and project coordinator at Brooklyn College benefited from working with an evaluator with higher standards of quality assurance than in previous years. The project team received raw data for the first time and reported changes in project implementation based on the provided data summaries and annual report. The evaluation activities were implemented on-schedule with Hezel Associates keeping a watchful eye on the project timeline and progression.
