Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE; www.stemideas.org) was awarded a grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF; www.nsf.gov) to implement Digital East St. Louis (DESL) as part of the Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) initiative. Hezel Associates has been contracted to assist with the building of the DESL project’s research capacity, as well as conduct an external evaluation to (a) monitor project implementation; (b) provide formative feedback for project improvements; and (c) assess the effectiveness of the project in terms of achieving its goals and its contributions to the body of knowledge on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.
During the study, SIUE and partners will develop and test a model for technology-focused urban place-based learning, aimed to motivate and help prepare minority middle-grade students to pursue STEM education and career pathways.
